Jones homers to lead Braces in win over Florida Marlins

    AP, ATLANTA
    Friday, May 06, 2005, Page 24

Tim Hudson took a shutout into the eighth inning, Chipper Jones homered in his return to the Atlanta lineup and the Braves beat the Florida Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday.

Adam LaRoche hit three doubles and drove in three runs for the Braves and Andruw Jones also homered. The teams split a two-game series at Turner Field, leaving the Marlins (15-10) with a percentage-point lead over Atlanta (16-11) in Major League Baseball's NL East Division.

Hudson (3-1) gave up five hits and one earned run in 7 1-3 innings, bouncing back from his worst start of the season, having surrendered nine hits and six runs in a loss to St. Louis. He was dominant against the same Marlins lineup that put up 13 hits on the Braves the night before.

    Padres 8, Rockies 7

In San Diego, Ryan Klesko's second homer tied the game in the ninth inning, and Miguel Ojeda singled in the winning run off Marcos Carvajal with two outs in the 12th as the Padres handed the Rockies their eighth straight loss.

There were seven homers in the game at Petco Park, which has been criticized by Padres sluggers for its spacious outfield. The Padres had four, including Klesko's leadoff shot to right in the ninth on an 0-1 pitch from Chin-Hui Tsao to tie the game at 7.

    Diamondbacks 6, Giants 2

In Phoenix, Chris Snyder had a run-scoring double that capped a four-run fourth inning and made a key pickoff throw from behind the plate to throw out Ray Durham at first.

Brandon Webb (4-0) won for the first time since April 8, allowing two runs, four hits and a season-high four walks in six innings. Luis Gonzalez had three hits as Arizona won for the ninth time in 12 games.

Brett Tomko (2-4) gave up four runs and nine hits in six innings. The Giants have scored a total of five runs in his four losses.

    Mets 3, Phillies 2

In New York, Jae Seo (2-1) pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings, and streaking slugger Cliff Floyd homered and made an outstanding catch that saved two runs as New York edged Philadelphia.

Victor Diaz also connected to end a long slump, and Floyd added an RBI single as the Mets won for the third time in four games following a four-game losing streak.

Chase Utley and Bobby Abreu hit consecutive homers off Braden Looper in the ninth, but the last-place Phillies have dropped 10 of 15 overall. Randy Wolf (1-4) lost his third straight start, allowing three runs, five hits and four walks in seven innings.

    Cardinals 7, Reds 3

In Cincinnati, Scott Rolen returned from a sore back and hit a two-run homer as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of Cincinnati.

Mark Mulder (4-1) allowed only three singles -- two of them infield hits -- over seven shutout innings, helping St. Louis improve the NL's best record to 18-8, the Cardinals' best start since 1948.

Brandon Claussen (1-3) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 3 1-3 innings as Cincinnati lost its seventh straight.

    Pirates 6, Astros 4

In Houston, Daryle Ward hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth and the bullpen blew another win for Roger Clemens in a loss to the Pittsburgh.

Ward, who played with the Astros from 1998-2002, led off the ninth by sending Brad Lidge's 1-0 pitch deep into the right-field seats for a 4-3 lead.

Other results: Brewers 4, Cubs 3; Nationals 5, Dodgers 2.
