Pope honored at matches

UEFA asked soccer clubs on Monday to honor Pope John Paul II at European competition matches this week. European soccer's governing body said it had requested a minute of silence be observed before kickoff at the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday and Wednesday and at UEFA Cup matches on Thursday. "Pope John Paul II was a great worldwide leader of people and a firm believer in peace," said UEFA chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson. "His work and efforts in this area commanded enormous respect and recognition from people all over the world, no matter their religious beliefs or persuasion. He led the Roman Catholic Church for a period of 26 years during a time of great change and upheaval in the world and he was clearly a very special man. His loss will be felt by millions and it is right that we pay our respects appropriately."

Kemp gets busted for hemp

Former NBA star Shawn Kemp and another man were arrested early Monday near Seattle, Washington after officers found what appeared to be marijuana and cocaine in a pickup truck owned by one of the men, authorities said. Kemp was held for investigation of drug possession and is due in court Tuesday, King County Jail spokesman Troy Bacon said. He was released Monday evening, according to the jail Web site. The county sheriff's office said the arrest happened in suburban Shoreline after an officer smelled marijuana while talking to two men standing by a pickup in a parking lot.
