Ryan Babel scored twice on his 18th birthday as Ajax Amsterdam crushed FC Groningen 4-0 to narrow the gap on league leaders PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar.
Alkmaar downed RBC Roosendaal 2-0 on Saturday to start the Dutch league's month-long winter break atop the Eredivisie. AZ has 42 points, the same as PSV, which lost 2-0 to Roda JC Kerkrade Saturday and trails on goals scored 44-42.
Ajax is third on 37 points, six ahead of fourth-placed archrival Feyenoord, which went down 2-0 to ADO The Hague on Sunday.
