"It's something of a historical issue scoring two goals in the championship. The [team] deserved it as they gave their all," he said.

"We still made mistakes, at least five of the goals were give-aways, but the [futsal squad] certainly learnt from these games," he said.

In the day's other Group A action, reigning world champions Spain beat Egypt 7-0 and booked their place in the second-round group stage in front of a rather small crowd of 350 at the National College of Physical Education and Sports Gymnasium in Linkou.

The results mean that Spain topped Group A, Ukraine placed second and Egypt third, while Taiwan was awarded the wooden spoon for placing last.

In Group C, Italy beat Paraguay 4-2 and Japan made a surprise stand against the mighty US team to hold them to a 1-1 draw.

Italy and the US therefore top Group C and go through to the next round, with Paraguay in third place and Japan coming in last.

Group B will be decided today with Australia playing Thailand and Brazil meeting the Czech Republic.

In Group D, Argentina play Iran and Portugal meet Cuba.
