Kevin Garnett leads Timberwolves to victory over Dallas

Kevin Garnett made two free throws with 5.9 seconds left and then Trenton Hassell blocked Jerry Stackhouse's long jumper at the buzzer, giving the Minnesota Timberwolves an 83-82 victory over Dallas on Monday night in the Mavericks' first of several games without Dirk Nowitzki.

Garnett finished with 21 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists, just missing his first triple-double of the season. Sam Cassell added 16.

Josh Howard led Dallas with 22 points, tying the career high he set two games before. Rookie Devin Harris had 14 points and Marquis Daniels had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Hornets 76, Jazz 75

In Salt Lake City, the New Orleans Hornets won for the first time this season, beating Utah behind 20 points and 11 rebounds by Jamaal Magloire.

The Hornets improved to 1-8 after Andrei Kirilenko missed two free throws with 4.4 seconds left .

Lee Nailon scored 16 points for the Hornets. Kirilenko led Utah with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks.

Suns 100, Bulls 82

In Phoenix, Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire scored 21 points apiece, and Phoenix made sure Chicago remained the NBA's only winless team.

Ben Gordon scored 20 points for the Bulls, who matched a franchise record for consecutive losses to start a season. The Bulls opened the 1967/1968 season 0-9.

Marion added a season-high 16 rebounds and Steve Nash added 15 points and six assists for the Suns.

Grizzlies 93, Spurs 90

In Memphis, Tennessee, Bonzi Wells had 26 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a minute left, to lead Memphis.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 26 points and nine rebounds, and Tony Parker added 18 points.

Playing without Pau Gasol, the Grizzlies used a 12-3 spurt in the third period to take the lead and held off a determined push by San Antonio down the stretch.
