Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova hit 23 winners in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over US Open winner and fellow russian Svetlana Kuznetsova at Staples Center.
"I love it here. The atmosphere is great," said Sharapova, making her debut in the tournament. "To be here where the Lakers play, you just feel that excitement. I love basketball."
