Schnyder, the 2002 champion, breezed into the quarters for the second straight year.
Eighth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia overcame Nathalie Dechy of France 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3 to play Olympic bronze medalist Alicia Molik of Australia next.
Former top-ranked tennis players Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt broke up and abandoned their wedding plans less than four months ahead of their planned marriage.
"Because of reasons which are private, the couple was forced to end the relationship," a short statement on Clijsters' Web site www.kimclijsters.com read yesterday.
The couple was to marry next February in Australia and organize a major celebration in an ornate castle for friends and family.
Clijsters has been injured for most of the season while Hewitt surged late in the season, reaching the final of the US Open last month, when he lost to Roger Federer.
Hewitt and Clijsters got engaged last year.
