Andy O'Brien's own goal canceled out Craig Bellamy's first half strike as Newcastle was held 1-1 by Charlton on Sunday and failed to capture fourth spot in the Premier League.
In a thrilling second half at the Valley, former England captain Alan Shearer, who spent much of the game with blood oozing from a cut head, had a header blocked on the Charlton line and later cleared off his own.

After Newcastle's Lee Bowyer harshly had a goal disallowed against his former club, Welsh international Bellamy met a left wing cross from Olivier Bernard at the near post to head the Magpies ahead five minutes before half time.
But the Addicks leveled six minutes after the break when Kevin Lisbie collected a throw in, lobbed the ball over defender O'Brien and dribbled past goalkeeper Shay Given. He was about to roll the ball into an empty Newcastle net when O'Brien tried to clear and slid the ball into his own net.
The equalizer meant Newcastle climbed just one place to eighth instead of five spots to fourth.
Shearer, who needed treatment after a clash of heads, almost restored the lead with a header which was cleared off the line by Danny Murphy with 10 minutes to go.
Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl almost snatched victory for Alan Curbishley's team with a shot which deflected onto the Newcastle crossbar and, in the scramble that followed, Shearer cleared off the line and Shaun Bartlett's follow up shot hit the post.

In the other Sunday game, Oliver Neuville scored both goals to give Borussia Moenchengladbach a 2-0 win over struggling Kaiserslautern.
Stuttgart went to the top of the standings with Saturday's 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund and has 20 points.
Wolfsburg could have leapfrogged over Stuttgart with a win, but it fell behind early and never recovered to stay at 18 points.
Silvio Schroeter, making his first start of the season, fired from the edge of the area in the eighth minute to give Hannover the lead.
He connected again in the 65th when he charged through on the right side and scored with a low shot.
Daniel Stendel used a defensive mistake for Hannover's third in injury time.
In Moenchengladbach, Neuville used his hand to punch the ball across the line in the 54th minute. The officials' vision was obscured by Kaiserslautern defender Ingo Hertzsch and the goal stood despite fierce Kaiserslautern protests to referee Uwe Kemmling.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur.
