"That doesn't matter once you get to the postseason," Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon said, telling reporters jokingly: "Maybe you guys can rub it in their face and make them think about it."
The Red Sox lead the AL wild-card race by six games over Anaheim and Texas.
Paul Quantrill (6-3) got out of trouble in the seventh, then allowed four runs in the eighth. Yankees starter Javier Vazquez allowed five runs in 4 2-3 innings and has won just once in eight starts.

San Francisco moved within 1 1/2 games of the first-place Dodgers in the National League West and a half-game behind Chicago in the wild-card race. The Dodgers and Giants play four more times, including the final three games of the season next weekend at Dodger Stadium.
"It basically came down to an at-bat with two out in the eighth and Pedro Feliz crushed it," Dodgers manager Jim Tracy said. "That was the game."
Feliz sent an 0-1 pitch from Yhency Brazoban (3-1) over the left-field wall for his second career slam and 21st homer of the year Saturday. He also hit a grand slam June 11, 2003, at Chicago.
"It was a big day for me. I feel excited about the grand slam to win the game," Feliz said. "When I was running the bases, I was thinking, `We already have this game.'"
Scott Eyre (2-2) pitched the eighth for the win and Ray Durham homered and hit an RBI double for San Francisco, which lost the opener of this crucial three-game series 3-2 Friday.

The Cubs appeared to be cruising to their 14th victory in 17 games behind 7 2-3 shutout innings from Mark Prior and a two-run homer by Todd Walker. But Diaz hit his second career homer off closer LaTroy Hawkins to tie it at 3.
Sammy Sosa, in a 5-for-38 slump, struck out in his first four at-bats and grounded into a double play. He left eight runners on base -- five in scoring position.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
