In Arlington, Texas, Mark Redman pitched seven strong innings, Eric Chavez homered and Oakland increased its AL West lead over slumping Texas.
Mark Kotsay homered and Adam Melhuse drove in two runs for the A's, who took three out of four in the series to take a 1 1/2-game lead over the Rangers. The A's have won eight of their last nine to improve from 4{ games behind the Rangers on July 23.
Redman (8-8) gave up one run and six hits on a humid, 95-degree afternoon. He struck out four and didn't issue a walk in sending Texas to its seventh loss in nine games.
Rookie Nick Regilio (0-2) allowed three runs and six hits over five innings in his second major league start.
White Sox 6, Tigers 4
In Detroit, Ben Davis and Aaron Rowand homered, and Freddy Garcia pitched into the eighth inning to help Chicago snap its season-high seven-game losing streak.
Rowand and Paul Konerko each had three of the 14 hits for the White Sox, whose last win was July 24 against the Tigers.
Garcia (9-9) allowed four runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, and struck out eight and walked one. Shingo Takatsu pitched the ninth for his ninth save in nine outings.
Brandon Inge and Rondell White homered for the Tigers, who lost starter Jeremy Bonderman (6-8) with one out in the second when he was hit in the left leg by Jose Valentin's line drive. He left the game and X-rays were negative. The team said Bonderman has a bruised left shin.
Devil Rays 5, Blue Jays 3
In St. Petersburg, Florida, Dewon Brazelton gave up one run and three hits in 6 2-3 innings, and Aubrey Huff hit a two-run homer.
Tampa Bay got off to a good start on its season-high 13-game homestand by winning five of six, including two of three against the Devil Rays.
Brazelton (4-3) struck out four and walked four, and has given up just three runs overall in 12 2-3 innings in winning consecutive starts. Danys Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.
Alexis Rios hit his first major league homer and drove in three runs for the Blue Jays.
Royals 8, Indians 7
In Kansas City, Missouri, John Buck's three-run homer capped a four-run fourth inning, and the Royals held on to beat the Indians.
Ken Harvey added a pair of one-run doubles and Abraham Nunez, obtained Saturday in a trade with Florida, had two RBIs in his Royals debut.
The Royals took two of three games for their first series win since they took three of four from Minnesota from July 15-18. That was also the last time, before this weekend, that they won back-to-back games.
Darrell May (8-11) gave up two runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two in five innings.
C.C. Sabathia (7-6) lasted five innings and gave up a season-high seven runs and nine hits.
Angels 3, Mariners 2
In Anaheim, California, Bartolo Colon won his fifth straight start and Robb Quinlan homered and doubled in the go-ahead run for the Angels.
Colon (9-9) allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings, keeping the Angels 2 1/2 games behind Oakland in the AL West and sending the Mariners to their 18th loss in 19 road games. Kevin Gregg pitched 1 2-3 scoreless innings, and Scot Shields got four outs for his fourth save.
Vladimir Guerrero, the Angels' home run and RBIs leader, played despite discomfort in his left shoulder after getting hit by a throw while running from second to third on Saturday. His ground-rule double in the sixth followed a leadoff single by Garret Anderson, who came home on Darin Erstad's sacrifice fly to tie it at 2.
