Mike Bibby scored 12 of his playoff career-high 36 points in the fourth quarter as Sacramento defeated Dallas 119-118 on Thursday to reach the second round of the National Basketball Association playoffs.
The Kings emerged with the victory in the highest-scoring game of the playoffs so far, advancing to the Western Conference semifinals with a 4-1 win in the best-of-seven series.
In the East, Detroit beat Milwaukee 91-77 to reached the second round with a four-games-to-one triumph in their first-round series.
The Kings and Mavericks, the NBA's top top offensive teams played an unusually low-key first-round series as neither team was averaging better than 95 points in the first four games.
But both teams busted out in this one as the Kings desperately tried to eliminate the Mavericks.
Sacramento were clinging to a 115-114 lead with 5.5 minutes left, but the teams combined for just eight points thereafter. Doug Christie made a pair of free throws for the Kings before Bibby buried a jumper to make it 119-114 at 3:21.
Sacramento did not score again and the Mavericks pulled within a point on Dirk Nowitzki's jumper with 29 seconds left.
Nowitzki forced Bibby into a miss and had a chance to win it at the other end, but Peja Stojakovic knocked the ball out of his hands and Nowitzki missed an off-balance jumper as time expired.
Dallas led by as many as 16 points early but could not contain the Kings, who shot 53 percent (48-of-91) from the floor and made 11-of-20 3-pointers.
Stojakovic collected 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Kings advanced to face the winner of the first-round series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets.
Nowitzki had 31 points and 14 rebounds and Steve Nash collected 24 points and 14 assists for the Mavericks, who reached the second round in their previous three playoff appearances.
In Detroit, Tayshaun Prince scored 10 of his playoff career-high 24 points in the decisive third quarter as the Pistons advanced to the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Detroit had taken a commanding 3-1 lead in the series by winning both games in Milwaukee, then prevented a return trip with a dominant performance. The Pistons never trailed after the first quarter, holding Milwaukee under 80 points for the first time in the series.
Prince was nearly flawless on offense, making 11-of-15 shots from the floor and 2-of-4 free throws.
He narrowly missed a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists.
Prince was the most consistent player in the series for Detroit, averaging 17.4 points and shooting 59 percent (35-for-59) from the floor.
The Pistons put away the game in the third quarter, making 13-of-22 shots. Prince was 5-of-6 in the period while Hamilton and Chauncey Billups each made 3-of-5 shots.
Detroit had a 41-36 lead after Milwaukee's Keith Van Horn opened the second half with a jumper. But the Pistons responded with eight straight points, led by Prince, who had a pair of baskets and assisted on a jumper by Hamilton.
Billups scored 19 points and Hamilton added 18 for Detroit, which will face the New Jersey Nets in the postseason for the second year in a row after getting swept in the conference finals.
Michael Redd scored 22 points and Joe Smith had 16 and eight rebounds for the Bucks, who shot under 40 percent (31-of-78) from the floor and were hammered on the boards, 52-36.
