Fourth-placed Leverkusen and Dortmund, two slots below, clashed in a matchup of the German league's two hottest teams in a crucial battle for UEFA Cup berths.

Leverkusen now has collected a league high 28 goals since the winter break and has 19 points out of its last seven matches. Dortmund's six-match unbeaten streak was ended.

Berlin escaped the demotion zone for the first time in months, much to the relief of the German soccer establishment, which doesn't want to see the country's biggest city and market without a first division club.

Bottom Cologne fell 4-2 to Hamburg, but not before 18-year-old Lukas Podolski made his case for a callup to Euro 2004 with another classy goal.

The stocky forward leveled the match at 1-1 in the 44th minute, outracing his defender on the dribble and sending a powerful shot inside the opposite post.

That was his sixth goal in 15 Bundesliga matches.
