Asashoryu ousted Musoyama yesterday to remain the sole undefeated wrestler at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament, securing his position as the favorite to walk away with the Emperor's Cup today.
The yokozuna pushed down Musyoyama's head soon after the wrestlers charged at one another, forcing the ozeki to lose his balance. Before Musoyama could regain his bearings, Asashoryu then pushed him out of the ring with a hard shove to the neck.
The Mongolian wrestler, currently the only grand champion in sumo, improved to 14-0 while Musoyama fell to 9-5.
Asashoryu's win at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium was his 29th straight -- underscoring his dominance of the sport.
Chiyotaikai suffered a painful loss to fellow ozeki Kaio, falling to 13-1 and putting him one step behind Asashoryu in the competition for winner of the 15-day tournament.
Kaio, who won his 10th straight against his fellow ozeki, proved he was still Chiyotaikai's nemesis with the bout. Kaio improved to 12-2, while Chiyotaikai fell to 13-1.
Asasekiryu stayed in the running for the Emperor's cup with a quick win over Miyabiyama.
