Gail Devers had a good start yesterday in her quest for an unprecedented 60m sprint and hurdles double at the indoor World Championship, dominating her sprint heat to coast into the semifinals.
The 37-year-old American finished her race in 7.15 seconds, a top time of the morning she shared with rival Christine Arron of France.
Devers, who already clinched a similar double at the US championships over the weekend, eased up well before the finish and still clocked a time just .05 seconds off her season's best. It was a smooth performance, considering she only arrived in the Hungarian capital on Thursday.
The hurdle race for the two-time Olympic 100m gold medalist and three-time world outdoor champion in the 100 hurdles is set for tomorrow.
Even though Marion Jones and out-of-form defending champion Zhanna Block are not competing, Devers will have to keep an eye on the runner who beat them in Birmingham last month, Kim Gevaert of Belgium.
