Rangers have their backs against the wall

AP , GLASGOW, SCOTLAND

With Celtic 11 points clear and the title race all but over, Rangers can't afford anything other than victory at home to fifth place Motherwell today.

Alex McLeish's team lies second and sees its title drifting back to the green and white part of Glasgow.

But all is not lost.

A Rangers victory would cut the lead to eight points and then Celtic has a tough visit to third place Hearts on Sunday. If Hearts were to beat Martin O'Neill's men and Rangers won the two remaining Old Firm derbies, that would cut Celtic's advantage to two.

McLeish can recall Australian defender Craig Moore after suspension and, although Chris Burke is sidelined because of an ankle injury, Ronald de Boer is close to returning after knee surgery.

The Rangers manager, who won the title back from Celtic last season, said his club struggled maintain success while heavily in debt.

"Last year was an exercise when we had to cut costs, pure and simple," he said.

"We have had to tighten the purse strings and it has made it difficult. We are in a period of transition and rebuilding but we will try to remain successful."

O'Neill, whose team is 22 points ahead of Hearts, gets the chance to field new signing Stephen Pearson at Tynecastle, the attacking midfielder hired from Motherwell a week ago. But he said he didn't have the cash available to make any big name signings with the transfer window open.

"I am not in a position to do anything in terms of the market," O'Neill said. "I have made enquiries about players but they would be on loan. We have bought Stephen Pearson from Motherwell and hopefully he will do fine."

Down at the bottom, last place Partick hopes to gain ground on next to last Dundee with a victory at Firhill.

The Jags have only nine points from 19 games, half of Dundee's total, but face a team in financial disarray. Dundee went into administration in November and fired 15 players.
