Kenny Thomas had 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Greg Buckner had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the 76ers. They have lost four straight, all on the road, and are 4-7 with Allen Iverson -- sidelined by a right knee contusion -- out of the lineup.
"We had no defensive toughness at all," 76ers coach Randy Ayers said. "For us to be a competitive team in this league, we have to be tough. You have to make guys get up the court and play aggressive defense."
Houston scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to take its biggest lead at 70-56. The 76ers missed their first eight shots of the period.
"I liked the start of the fourth quarter," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "It's always good to win. I think some guys did some good things. Even though [the 76ers] were undermanned, they play hard and are well coached and always play you close."
After trailing by six at the half, the 76ers closed to 58-56 after three quarters, with Buckner scoring six points in the period.
Hornets 96, Celtics 94
Baron Davis scored 29 points and had 10 assists while P.J. Brown scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, leading New Orleans past the Boston Celtics 96-94 on Wednesday and snapping the Hornets' four-game road losing streak.
New Orleans is now 3-0 against Boston this season.
Ricky Davis made it close late by hitting a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to cut the Hornets' lead to 96-94. Boston then forced the Hornets to throw the ensuing inbounds pass away. But George Lynch stole Jiri Welsch's entry pass to seal the win.
"This game was full of runs and we were fortunate enough to make the last run," Baron Davis said. "We have our defensive swagger back and it was nice to get a road win after I felt we gave one away in Detroit."
Welsch led Boston with 17 points and Mike James added 15 points. Paul Pierce scored 14 points on just 4-of-16 shooting.
"We hung around today," Celtics center Chris Mihm said. "We had our chances and that's what's discouraging."

US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
