Ricky Ponting joined Don Bradman as the only players to score three double centuries in a year, leaving India battling to save the third cricket test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Ponting, 29, played one of his most mature innings of a 74-test career to post a career-best 257 runs Sunday and put Australia in a strong position to level the series.
After India collapsed to 366 all out after deciding to bat first, Australia, resuming the day on 317 for three, hit up a match-controling 558 all out and a lead of 192 runs.

India was 27 for two in 11 overs at stumps and facing an uphill task to hang on to its 1-0 lead in the four-test series.
The visitors lost openers Akash Chopra (4) and Virender Sehwag (11) with the score on 19. But Rahul Dravid and skipper Sourav Ganguly, on six runs apiece, survived a menacing new-ball spell from fast bowler Brett Lee over 28 minutes to resume the fight Monday.
Bradman scored three centuries against England in 1930 -- 254 at Lords, 334 at Headingley and 232 at The Oval -- in 54 days.
Ponting, the captain-elect, and the most successful batsman in 2003 with 1,472 runs, batted responsibly and hit 26 fours off 458 balls as he batted for just 10 minutes under 10 hours -- the longest he's batted.
His other double centuries were 206 against the West Indies in Port-of-Spain in April and 242 against India in Adelaide when Australia lost by four wickets.
Ponting said he has peaked as a batsman.
"Consistency has been the biggest thing for me this year," he said. "I'm probably at the pinnacle of my career batting-wise."
Ponting scored 2,170 runs in the middle order, most often at No. 6, but since his promotion to No. 3 in 2001, he has scored 3,352 runs with 13 centuries.
Ponting is only the fifth batsman to score back-to-back double centuries after Englishman Walter Hammond, Bradman, South African Graeme Smith and Indian Vinod Kambli.
Ponting's six centuries this year has only been beat by Viv Richards' seven in 1976 when the West Indian scored 1,710 runs, the highest in test cricket in a single year.
Ponting's run total this year is the fourth highest behind Richards, India's Sunil Gavaskar (1,555 in 1979) and England's Michael Vaughan (1,480 in 2002).
New Zealand versus Pakistan
Young fast bowler Ian Butler took a career-best 6-46 to put New Zealand in command of the second cricket test against Pakistan at the end of the third day Sunday.
Operating with the second new ball, Butler sent Pakistan tumbling from 171-5 to 196 all out, giving New Zealand a 170-run first innings lead. At stumps New Zealand was 75-3 in its second innings, leading by 245 overall with two days remaining.
South Africa versus West Indies
South Africa cruised to 303 for three and a lead of 39 runs in the first innings against the West Indies on the second day of the second test Saturday at Kingsmead Stadium.
After the West Indies' stubborn tail was overcome and the visitors were bowled out for 264, Proteas opener Herschelle Gibbs' 23rd boundary helped his side pass that score, and soon after he was bowled for 142, his 11th test century and maiden hundred against the tourists.
Left unbeaten when bad light ended play were Jacques Kallis on 74, and Gary Kirsten on 16.
The pair had been scornful of the first offer to leave the field for bad light, even though the West Indies had their two fastest bowlers in Fidel Edwards and Adam Sanford in action.
Kallis, lucky to have been given not out after getting the faintest of outside edges to Vasbert Drakes when he was on 48, was composed until a measure of urgency was required as he reached his 27th test half-century.
Gibbs had made 104 out of his team's 210 for two at tea, and accelerated away to 142 off 175 balls to fall just three runs short of reaching 4,000 test runs.
Gibbs batted without any indication of a lack of confidence after his nose was broken when he was hit in the face by a ball off Vasbert Drakes during the first-test victory in Johannesburg.
He raced to his milestone in just 130 balls in 109 minutes, hitting 16 fours as he treated every one of the six West Indian bowlers with disdain. His dominance was marked by the four with which he reached his century -- a pull in front of square off Drakes from a delivery that was not really that short.
He has now scored centuries against all test-playing nations except Sri Lanka, and was only dismissed to a loose pull shot off a Sanford delivery.
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). He
Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
