England feels the heat as Sri Lanka takes charge

Unbeaten half-centuries from Thilan Samarweerea and Mahela Jayawardene yesterday put Sri Lanka in a commanding position in its third and final test against England.

Samaraweera (68 not out) and Jayawardene (60 not out) put on 126 runs for their unfinished third-wicket partnership that lifted Sri Lanka to 264 for two at the close of second day's play, just one run behind England's first innings total of 265.

England was left ruing two dropped chances by slip fielder Marcus Trescothick that gave Samaraweera and Jayawardene each a second chance to build on the foundation provided by former captain Sanath Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya struck form with a 104-ball 85, his highest score against England behind the 213 he posted at The Oval in 1998.

Earlier, left-arm pace bowler Chaminda Vaas (3 for 64) polished off the English tail by trapping both James Kirtley (1) and James Anderson (1) leg before wicket.

England added just six runs to the overnight total of 259 for eight.
