Three teams celebrated division titles and another clinched a playoff berth on Sunday in Week 15 of the National Football League.
It was also a memorable day for quarterback Billy Volek, running backs Troy Hambrick and Curtis Martin and rookie cornerback Terence Newman.
The Kansas City Chiefs (12-2), Carolina Panthers (9-5) and St. Louis Rams (11-3) captured division crowns and the Indianapolis Colts (11-3) sealed a playoff berth.
Priest Holmes rushed for three touchdowns and Trent Green passed for 341 yards and three scores as the Chiefs clinched the AFC West title with a 45-17 rout of the Detroit Lions, who matched an NFL record with their 23rd straight road loss.
The Chiefs (12-2) rebounded from last week's embarrassing 45-27 loss at Denver to claim their first division crown since 1997.
"Needless to say, we're excited but this is the first phase of a championship," Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said.
Meanwhile, the Lions (4-10) continued their futility away from home in tying the longest road skid in NFL history, set by the Houston Oilers from 1981-84. Detroit has not won on the road since a 10-7 victory over the New York Jets on December 17, 2000.
The Lions conclude their road schedule next Sunday against the Panthers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and claimed the NFC South title with a 20-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals (3-11).
It was fitting that the Rams sealed their third NFC West title in five years at home. Marc Bulger threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns and Marshall Faulk added 85 yards rushing and a score to lead the Rams to a 27-22 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
The Rams increased their winning streak at the Edwards Jones Dome to 13 games, tying a franchise record for consecutive home wins, and moved ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles (10-3) in the race for home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.
Peyton Manning threw five touchdown passes, including two each to Brandon Stokley and Marvin Harrison, as the Colts routed the Atlanta Falcons, 38-7, to clinch a playoff spot.
Indianapolis remained one game ahead of the Tennessee Titans (10-4) in the AFC South and needs to win one of its two remaining games to clinch the division title.
But Volek, a fourth-year backup quarterback, stepped in for an injured Steve McNair, and kept the Titans a game off the pace.
Things also went quite well for Hambrick, who rushed for a career-high 189 yards and the Dallas Cowboys forced six turnovers, including three interceptions by Newman, and rolled to a 27-0 rout of the Washington Redskins.
The New England Patriots (12-2), who clinched the AFC East title last week, extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 27-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and are battling for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
In the Sunday night game, the New Orleans Saints (7-7) also kept alive the playoff hopes with a 45-7 rout of the New York Giants (4-10).
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. Forget Real Madrid, Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain, the world’s best soccer team — statistically speaking — might be a little-known outfit from the closed central Asian nation of Turkmenistan. Founded last year, Arkadag, named in honor of former Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, have been unstoppable, notching up 36 consecutive domestic victories in a run still ongoing. The side have not lost a single competitive match and swept to a league and cup double in their inaugural season — success unthinkable almost anywhere else. However, in Turkmenistan, it could hardly have gone any other way. The energy-rich country is one of the most closed
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
