Captain-elect Ricky Ponting scored an unbeaten 176 runs yesterday to put Australia in control of the second cricket test against India at the Adelaide Oval.
The home side rallied around Ponting's 19th test century to score a record 400 for five in 90 overs at stumps after skipper Steve Waugh won the toss and decided to bat first. Adam Gilchrist was unbeaten on nine.
It was only the fifth time Australia has scored 400 runs in a day in a home test.
"I can play better," said Ponting. "I can keep improving. That's one of the greatest strengths of this team. No one is ever happy with where they are as an individual or with where the team's at."
Ponting, who will take over the test captaincy when Waugh retires at the end of the current series in January, completed 1,000 runs in a calendar year for the second year in a row.

Muttiah Muralitharan and pacer Chaminda Vaas claimed four wickets each yesterday as Sri Lanka secured an 88-run lead in its second cricket test match against England.
Spin ace Muralitharan (4 for 60) and Vaas (4 for 77) shared the spoils as England was bowled out for 294 in response to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 382.
Sri Lanka put on 39 for the loss of opener Marvan Atapattu's wicket to left-arm spinner Ashley Giles in the second innings, before bad light forced the third day's play to be stopped 55 minutes before the scheduled draw of stumps.
At close, opener Sanath Jayasuriya (25 not out) and Kumar Sangakkara (1 not out) were at the crease, with Sri Lanka having bolstered its lead to 127.
Defensive batting by both teams resulted in just 170 runs being scored in a dull day's play.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
