Beckham says Madrid move his best ever

Attracting rave reviews for his performances with Real Madrid, David Beckham said on Thursday that signing for the Spanish powerhouse was one of the best decisions he had ever made.

Beckham, speaking at a press conference at Madrid's training ground, was responding to a question about recent speculation that Liverpool striker Michael Owen could become the next player to join Madrid's star-studded squad.

"To be honest with you it's unfair for me to comment because he is a Liverpool player," the midfielder said. "There will always be speculation linking great players to great teams. But if anybody asked me I would say coming to Real Madrid was one of the best decisions I have ever made."

Beckham, who joined Madrid from Manchester United in June, said he felt "much happier" in the central midfield role he has been allocated by Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz.

"I've played on the right for England and Manchester United for a long time, but this is a change, I have enjoyed immensely playing here and having so many great players around me," he said.

The midfielder's performances have delighted -- and perhaps surprised -- many Madrid supporters, with Spanish sports newspapers voting him man of the match several times in his eight league appearances for the Spanish powerhouse.

"I think that one thing I had to prove to people when I came to Real Madrid was that I could actually play football. Hopefully I'm doing that and I'll carry on doing that because I'm enjoying the city, I'm enjoying playing with these players and the way fans have reacted has made me feel at home straight away," Beckham said.

"If I have become a better player it's because these players around me have made me step up to another level, also the Spanish league is different," he added.

Beckham also said he was looking forward to playing against Madrid's archrival Barcelona on Dec. 7 at the Nou Camp, the venue where he gained a Champions League winners' medal in 1999.
