Rangers blow sorry Hurricanes away to snap Carolina streak

Mike Dunham made 29 saves and Petr Nedved scored New York's first powerplay goal of the season as the Rangers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 in the National Hockey League on Thursday.

The Rangers had failed to score a powerplay goal in their first 32 chances but finally connected with the extra man when Nedved scored at 12:12 of the second period to make it 3-1.

Anson Carter and Jamie Lundmark scored earlier in the game for the Rangers, the first goal of the season for both players.

Mark Messier completed the Ranger scoring with a third period tally.

Carolina had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped with the loss (2-0-4).

Josef Vasicek scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes.

The Rangers completed their season-long six-game homestand with a 3-1-2 record after starting the season with a pair of games on the road.

Kevin Weekes made 22 saves for the Hurricanes, but had his shutout streak snapped at 183 minutes, 16 seconds.

Sabres 5, Maple Leafs 3

In Buffalo, Miroslav Satan, Alexei Zhitnik and Alex Kotalik all had a goal and an assist to lead the Sabres to a 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Chris Drury and Taylor Pyatt scored the other goals for the Sabres, who are 11-2-3 against the Leafs at home in their last 16 regular season games.

Tie Domi, Tom Fitzgerald and Tomas Kaberle scored the goals for Toronto.

Sharks 2, Lightning 2

In Tampa, Dave Andreychuk's powerplay goal early in the third period gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a 2-2 tie with the San Jose Sharks.

The Lightning are 6-0-1 to start the season.

Pavel Kubina had a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay.

Wayne Primeau and Patrick Marleau scored for the Sharks, who are winless in seven games (0-3-4).

Canadiens 1, Bruins 0 (OT)

In Boston, Joe Juneau scored at 1:39 of overtime to give the Bruins a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal had gone more than three games without a goal before Juneau ended the draught Jose Theodore posted his third shutout of the season, stopping 21 shots.

Felix Potvin made 37 saves in goal for the Bruins. Potvin has allowed two goals in his past three games.

Panthers 3, Senators 2

In Ottawa, Steve Shields made 30 saves as the Florida Panthers edged the Senators 3-2.

Olli Jokinen, Byron Ritchie and Mike Van Ryn scored the goals for the Panthers, who snapped Ottawa's four-game winning streak. Marian Hossa and Vaclav Varada scored the goals for the Senators.

Devils 3, Flyers 2

In East Rutherford, Mike Rupp scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 8:43 to play, as the New Jersey Devils edged the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2.

Scott Stevens added a goal and an assist for the Devils, while Martin Brodeur made just 16 saves as New Jersey won for the first time at home in five games this season (1-3-1).

Tony Amonte and Simon Gagne replied for the Flyers, who saw their three-game winning streak (2-0-1) snapped.
