Mallorca shocks Deportivo with a two-goal victory

AP , MADRID, SPAIN

Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o and Dutch striker Arnold Bruggink netted late goals Wednesday as lowly Mallorca shocked Spanish league leader Deportivo de La Coruna 2-0.

In another ninth-round game, Valencia drew 2-2 at home with Celta de Vigo and failed to take advantage of Deportivo's defeat and move to the top of the standings.

FC Barcelona gained its first three points at the Camp Nou stadium this season, comfortably beating Murcia 3-0.

After nine games, Deportivo leads the standings with 21 points, one point clear of Real Madrid, which drew 0-0 with Zaragoza on Tuesday. Valencia is third with 20 points but stays behind Madrid on goal difference. Osasuna is next with 17, while Barcelona moves up to fifth with 15.

Mallorca began the match in 19th place but gained its first victory in seven matches in surprise fashion.

Mallorca kept Deportivo at bay before Eto'o netted from the penalty spot in the 75th minute after left back Enrique Romero was adjudged to have pushed Uruguayan forward Fernando Correa.

Mallorca added to Deportivo's woes when substitute Bruggink, who had replaced Correa in the 83rd minute, chipped the second goal four minutes later to inflict Deportivo's second defeat of the season.

Valencia forward Pablo Aimar opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with a rare header. Italian veteran left back Amedeo Carboni created the goal with a run to the goalline before crossing for Aimar.

Celta leveled against the run of play in the 57th minute through a shot from the edge of the area by Argentine central defender Eduardo Berizzo.

Celta forward Jesuli Mora surprised Valencia's normally watertight defense eight minutes later by bursting through to give his team in the lead.

Three minutes later, Uruguayan midfielder Fabian Canobbio took full advantage of slack marking by Celta defenders to level the match for Valencia.
