Carlos Moya beat an ailing Mariano Zabaleta to give Spain a 2-0 lead over Argentina, while Roger Federer beat Mark Philippoussis in a Wimbledon final rematch to draw Switzerland 1-1 with Australia in the Davis Cup semifinals.
Venezuela was up 2-0 over Bahamas, with Jose de Armas and Kepler Orellana winning their matches Friday night. Romania took a 1-0 lead over Ecuador with the second match of the night suspended due to darkness.

In London, Moya won 5-7, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 on clay in Malaga, but only after Zabaleta suffered a cramp in his left leg with the score tied 2-2 in the third set.

Zabaleta had to be treated by a trainer for several minutes on the sidelines. He decided to play on, but couldn't serve with power, change direction or run down balls. He won only one of the next 17 games.
"It wasn't a normal day," Moya said. "I don't like to win that way, but I prefer to win."

Earlier Friday, Juan Carlos Ferrero, the world's top-ranked player, breezed to a 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 win over Gaston Gaudio to put Spain ahead 1-0 in the best-of-five series. Argentina's top two players, David Nalbandian and Guillermo Coria, had both withdrawn with injuries.
In Melbourne, on a hard court, Federer downed Philippoussis 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) after Lleyton Hewitt gave Australia a 1-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 win over Michel Kratochvil.
Ferrero, playing at home for the first time since he became No. 1 following his US Open final appearance, fell behind 3-1 to Gaudio and lost three of his first five service games. But he picked up his game, winning 10 points in a row in the second.
``I tried to save energy for the third set, but he just played better than me,'' said Gaudio.
In Maracaibo, Venezuela, Orellana easily defeated Bahama's No. 1 seed, Kevin Mulling, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 on Friday.
Armas, relying on his strong backhand and rushing frequently to the net, downed Bahamas' No. 2 Christopher Eldon 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
Orellana and Armas are scheduled to meet Mulling and Davin Rossell in doubles today.
In Quito, Ecuador, Romania's Victor Hanescu beat Ecuador's No. 2 player Giovanni Lapentti 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 6-4, in a match that lasted 4 hours and 10 minutes.
The second match between Ecuador's No. 1 Nicolas Lapentti and Romanian No. 2 Razvan Sabau was suspended after three hours and 20 minutes at 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 4-5, with Sabau leading in the fourth set.
The match was scheduled to resume before Saturday's doubles match between the Lapentti brothers and Romania's Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau.
In more doubles Saturday, Lucas Arnold and Agustin Calleri hope to keep the tie alive against Albert Costa and Alex Corretja.
Both Australian matches were played indoors under the retractable roof of the Rod Laver Arena due to poor weather.
Philippoussis appeared to sleepwalk at the start, allowing Federer to go up 3-0. And things didn't improve much as Federer dominated an error-prone Philippoussis before a crowd of 13,022.
"He fought back, and I really had to give everything in the third set," Federer said. "I wanted to get it over in three because anything can happen if it goes past that."
Hewitt, a former No. 1, opened his match by breaking Kratochvil's serve, broke him again in the third game of the second set and three more times in the third. The Australian broke Kratochvil's serve in the third, fifth and final games of the third set.
"I played really well and was aggressive from the start," said Hewitt, who said he was suffering from a cold and "was happy to get through today."
On Saturday, Federer and 32-year-old Marc Rosset, who moved from non-playing to playing captain, are scheduled to take on Wayne Arthurs and Todd Woodbridge in doubles.
Australia or Switzerland will host either Spain or Argentina in the Davis Cup final from Nov. 28-30.
In World Group playoffs, US Open champion Andy Roddick was upset by Dominik Hrbaty 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 but Mardy Fish salvaged a 1-1 tie for the United States against Slovakia when he beat Karol Kucera 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-1 in Bratislava.
Hrbaty, ranked 60th, dropped to his knees, broke into tears and circled the clay court draped in Slovakia's red, white and blue flag.
"When I started to return his service, that was the key," Hrbaty said. "I hope we will show the Americans where the small nation of Slovakia is."
Fish won an almost four-hour marathon in his Davis Cup debut, rallying against Kucera after a 30-minute power cut in the second set.
The Americans, the most successful team in Davis Cup history, must defeat Slovakia to remain in the 16-team top tier of the Cup.
In other playoffs, Austria took a 2-0 lead over Belgium; Morocco leads Britain 2-0; the Netherlands leads India 2-0; Belarus and Germany were tied at 1-1; and Thailand and the Czech Republic were tied 1-1 and Canada hosted Brazil.

Wang Yeu-tzuoo and Lu Yen-hsun defeated Hong Kong's John Hui and Brian Hung 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in Davis Cup doubles play yesterday to give Taiwan an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the third round of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II. Taiwan's doubles victory, in combination with two singles victories by Wang and Lu on Friday, assured Taiwan of promotion to Group I next year. Two singles games between Taiwan and Hong Kong are still scheduled for Sunday at the Yang-Ming Tennis Center in the southern city of Kaohsiung.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany.
