German powerhouse Bayern Munich rallied to beat Celtic 2-1 in Munich. Celtic, last year's runner-up in the UEFA Cup, took the lead in the 57th minute against Bayern, surprisingly eliminated in the first group stage last year.
Didier Agathe's cross missed forward John Hartson, but Alan Thompson was there and headed past Oliver Kahn. Roy Makaay, Ze Roberto and Hasan Salihamidzic all missed good chances before Makaay finally put one past 'keeper Magnus Hedman.
Celtic failed to clear the ball in the area, and Makaay -- who recently joined Bayern from Deportivo La Coruna -- shot just inside the post in the 73rd minute. Makaay scored the winner in the 86th minute when Hedman misjudged his cross.
"I saw [midfielder] Michael Ballack go in. I crossed the ball, and it didn't touch him. The goalkeeper was stranded," said Makaay. "It's a difficult ball for a keeper."
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill was disappointed at not picking up at least a point.
"We got ourselves in front against one of the best sides in European football," said O'Neill. "We were in control of it. A wonder goal made it 1-1, even then we were still doing fine. To concede that goal in the end was sloppy."
French champion Lyon also won in Group A, beating Anderlecht 1-0. Juninho scored on a penalty in the 25th minute.
