The 2003 Terry Fox Run in Taiwan, an annual charity event for cancer research, will take place in the nation's three biggest cities beginning next month, the Terry Fox Foundation announced yesterday.
The event will be held in Kaohsiung, Taipei and Taichung, Oct. 18, Oct. 19 and Nov. 15, respectively.
The event takes its name from Canadian Terry Fox who, after losing his right leg to bone cancer in 1977, ran across Canada in 1980 on an artificial leg in an effort to raise funds for cancer research. Fox covered 5,373km at a rate of about 42km per day.
Fox died the next year at the age of 21, after the disease spread to his lungs.

The mayor is chairman of the Terry Fox Run in Taipei.
Among the over 300 major cities that participate in the event, Taipei ranked No. 5 in terms of the amount of funds raised and No. 7 in terms of the number of participants.
"This year, with your participation and donations, we could be one step closer to finding a cure for cancer," Ma said.
All Taiwan residents are welcome to take part in the event.
