Leg-spinner Alok Kapali recorded Bangladeshs first hat-trick in Test cricket in an exciting third days play against Pakistan in the second Test at Peshawar's Arbab Niaz stadium yesterday.
Kapali wrapped up Pakistans innings for 295 with three wickets off successive balls to give Bangladesh an important lead of 66 runs.
But Pakistan hit back through express pacer Shoaib Akhtar who dismissed first innings century maker Javed Omar for nought and Hanan Sarkar for 7 in the second innings.
Habibul Bashar (28) and Mohammad Ashraful (7) were the other men out and at stumps Bangladesh were 52-4 with the tourists lead stretched to 118 runs.
Razin Saleh was unbeaten on 7 and Kapali on 4 after a day full of fluctuating fortunes.
Earlier yesterday, Rafique bowled a probing line and length and bowled all but one over in the first two sessions to halt Pakistans progress after they resumed at 134-2.
Rafique finished with his second five wicket haul, 5-118, to help Bangladesh take a 66-run lead for the first time in 23 Tests they have played since gaining Test status in 2000.
Yousuf Youhana fought a long hard battle and remained unbeaten on 64 after 214 minutes batting, hitting six fours and a six.
Rafique first forced an edge off opener Taufeeq Umer for 75 and then took the prized wicket of Inzamam-ul Haq, bowled for 43.
The Taufeeq-Inzamam stand yielded 75 for the third wicket.
Skipper Rashid Latif and Yousuf Youhana batted sensibly and took Pakistan to 222-4 at lunch before Rafique struck twice to force Pakistan on the back foot.
The left arm spinner broke the stand soon after resumption when his looping delivery brought Latif out of the crease for wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud to effect a stumping.
Latif made 40 with five boundaries and added 64 invaluable runs for the fifth wicket, a new record against Bangladesh and beating the previous best of 59 for this wicket between Youhana and Abdul Razzaq in Dhaka last year.
Rafique then trapped injured Shoaib Malik, batting with a runner, in front of the wicket for nought to record his second five-wicket haul in his fifth Test.
Akhtar then hit Rafique for two towering sixes before he was bowled by Khaled Mahmud for 15.
Kapali then wrapped up Pakistans innings by dismissing Shabbir Ahmed for 8 and Danish Kaneria for nought with his fifth and sixth ball of the second over and then came back to dismiss number eleven Umer Gul with his first ball of the third over to finish with remarkable figures of 3-3.
