Jose Serpa gets gold for Colombia in 50km event

Jose Serpa gave Colombia its first gold medal at the Pan American Games on Monday, winning the men's cycling 50km time trial in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 45 seconds.

Serpa took control at the 20km mark and held the lead until the end.

"The Americans were the favorites, but I started the race convinced I was going to take the gold," Serpa said. "I'm infinitely happy to give Colombia its first victory at the games."

Serpa beat American Chris Baldwin, who took silver 33 seconds behind the winner, while Venezuela's Raul Chacon was third, 55 seconds behind.

Kimberly Bruckner of the US took the women's 30km time-trial gold in 41:11. Clara Hughes of Canada was second in 41:49 and Kristin Armstrong of the US took bronze in 42:43.

In men's handball, Brazil beat Argentina 31-30 in overtime to win the gold medal. The US won the bronze after beating Uruguay 25-23.

The first gold medals will soon be awarded in swimming.

Meligeni saved seven match points and came back to beat former world No. 1 Marcelo Rios of Chile 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) for the men's singles gold medal.
