Peirsol's brother Aaron won gold in the men's 100 backstroke, finishing in 53.61 seconds, just .01 seconds off the world-record set by fellow American Lenny Krayzelburg in 1999. Krayzelburg is recovering from shoulder surgery and is not competing in Barcelona.
Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia and Matthew Welsh of Australia tied for the silver medal with identical times of 53.92.
In the women's 100m breaststroke, Luo Xuejuan of China won the gold in 1:06.80. Amanda Beard of the United States took silver (1:07.42) with bronze for Leisel Jones of Australia (1:07.47).
In Monday's semifinals, Jones set a world record of 1:06.37.
In the final event of the night, Antje Buschschulte of Germany won gold in the women's 100m backstroke, finishing in 1:00.50. Louise Ornstedt of Denmark and Katy Sexton of Britain had the identical time of 1:00.86 to share the silver medal.
On Wednesday, finals are also scheduled for men's 50 breaststroke, men's 800m freestyle relay, men's 200m butterfly, and women's 200m freestyle.
