    Giambi RBIs help Yankees beat Cubs

    Jason Giambi had three RBIs to back David Wells, and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 in their first game at Wrigley Field since sweeping the 1938 World Series.

    Sammy Sosa's eight-game suspension for using a corked bat was the focus before Friday's game, and then the Yankees took over.

    Wells (8-2) allowed seven hits in 7 2-3 innings, including Ramon Martinez's two-run homer in the third and Corey Patterson's solo shot in the eighth. Mariano Rivera got three outs for his fifth save in six chances, striking out Hee Seop Choi to end the game with runners on second and third.

    Giambi hit his 14th homer in the first, a two-run shot off Carlos Zambrano (5-5). Wells doubled for his first hit in three years.

    Expos 13, Rangers 10

    In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Brian Schneider drove in a career-high five runs with a homer and a three-run double, sending Texas to its season-high seventh straight loss.

    Ron Calloway homered for the second straight game in place of the injured Vladimir Guerrero, and Livan Hernandez (5-4) pitched seven innings and hit a two-run single.

    Juan Gonzalez had three RBIs, giving him 1,363 in his career -- two shy of Orlando Cepeda's record for Puerto Rican natives. Colby Lewis (4-4) allowed seven runs, seven hits and four walks in three innings.

    Athletics 7, Phillies 4

    In Philadelphia, Miguel Tejada broke out of a slump by tying a career high with four hits and drove in three runs as the Athletics returned to Philadelphia for the first time since they moved to Kansas City after the 1954 season. The A's then moved on to Oakland after the 1967 season.

    Barry Zito (7-4) took a one-hitter into the sixth inning and got his first win since May 15. He gave up two runs and five hits in six-plus innings.

    Brett Myers (5-5) allowed five runs and four hits in four-plus innings as Philadelphia lost its fourth straight.

    Mets 3, Mariners 2

    In New York, Cliff Floyd and Jason Phillips homered off Ryan Franklin (4-4) as New York broke Seattle's nine-game winning streak and 13-game road winning streak.

    In the first meeting ever between the teams, Jae Seo (3-2) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in seven innings.

    Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his 17th save.

    Blue Jays 9, Reds 2

    In Cincinnati, Roy Halladay (8-2) won his eighth straight start, matching Roger Clemens' team record, and Carlos Delgado hit hsi eighth career grand slam, breaking a tie with George Bell for the franchise record.

    Vernon Wells added a three-run homer, and Frank Catalanotto had four hits -- two singles, a double and a triple.

    Halladay gave up two runs -- one earned -- and eight hits in eight innings to beat John Riedling (0-3), who allowed six runs and seven hits in two innings.

    Marlins 4, Angels 1

    In Miami, Ivan Rodriguez hit a three-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth, and Carl Pavano (5-6) retired his final 18 batters. allowing three hits in eight innings as Florida won for the 10th time in 14 games.

    Braden Looper pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save. Kevin Appier (4-3) lost for the first time in seven starts since April 14, allowing four runs and three hits in seven innings.

    Astros 11, Devil Rays 8

    In Houston, Jeff Kent hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth off Travis Harper (0-4) after the Astros wasted a 7-0 lead. Houston moved past the Cubs into first place in the NL Central for the first time since April 15.

    Tampa Bay went ahead 8-7 in the eighth on Marlon Anderson's RBI double off Octavio Dotel (5-1) -- which scored Julio Lugo, released from the Astros on May 9 after being charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly attacking his wife. Lugo was booed time he came to the plate and went 1-for-5.

    Brewers 9, Red Sox 3

    In Milwaukee, Richie Sexson hit his 19th home run, and Wes Helms and Royce Clayton also homered as Milwaukee stretched a winning streak to four for the first time this season. Boston starter Tim Wakefield left in the third inning with a bruised right ankle after he was hit by a pitch from Wayne Franklin. Manny Ramirez homered for the Red Sox, who lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

    Jayson Durocher (2-0) got one out for the win. Hector Almonte (0-1) gave up five runs and six hits in 1 2-3 innings.

    Cardinals 8, Orioles 6

    In St. Louis, Albert Pujols capped a four-hit game with a three-run double in the eighth off Jorge Julio (0-4) as the Cardinals beat their former St. Louis rival and won their fifth straight. Pujols has seven straight hits, hiking his major league-leading average to .391.

    Deivi Cruz doubled for the third time and scored for a 6-5 lead on Geronimo Gil's eighth-inning single as the Orioles recovered from a five-run.

    Baltimore has lost four in a row. The St. Louis Browns left St. Louis to become the Orioles after the 1953 season.

    Dodgers 2, White Sox 1

    In Los Angeles, Paul Lo Duca extended his career-best hitting streak to 15 games with a pair of hits, including a tiebreaking single that led Los Angeles over Chicago.

    Brian Jordan homered to help back Kazuhisa Ishii (5-2), who allowed four hits over seven innings and struck out nine. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in his last 11 starts.

    Eric Gagne, the fifth Dodgers pitcher, got his 29th consecutive save and 21st this season.

    The White Sox played the Dodgers in a meaningful game for the first time since the 1959 World Series. The loss was the sixth in seven games for Chicago.

    Mark Buehrle (2-9) lost his eighth straight decision. Chicago's opening day starter is winless in nine starts since April 10.

    Giants 5, Tigers 3

    In San Francisco, Kirk Rueter won his fifth straight decision and drove in a run, and Marquis Grissom had two hits as San Francisco defeated Detroit in the first meeting of two storied franchises.

    Dmitri Young and Brandon Inge homered for the Tigers, who have the worst record in the majors (16-42). Detroit couldn't manage enough run support to back 20-year-old Jeremy Bonderman (2-8).

    Rueter (7-1) hasn't lost since April 29 against the Chicago Cubs, a span of seven starts. He allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings, and did not walk a batter.

    Tim Worrell pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 17 chances.

    Bonderman gave up six hits and four runs in six innings.

    Indians 6, Diamondbacks 3

    In Phoenix, Brandon Phillips broke an 0-for-29 slump with a go-ahead single in the sixth inning that helped Cleveland beat Arizona for its first interleague win this year.

    Jason Davis (5-4) allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. David Riske and Danys Baez combined on one-hit relief, with Baez getting three outs his 12th save in 15 chances.

    Arizona starter Edgar Gonzalez (1-1), at 20 the youngest player in the majors, gave up four runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings.

    Robby Hammock, recalled from Triple-A Tucson, hit a two-run double for the Diamondbacks.

    Twins 7, Padres 5

    In San Diego, former-Padres Chris Gomez hit a two-out, two-run double off Rod Beck (0-1) in the 11th inning.

    Gomez had three RBIs and Jacque Jones drove in two runs as Minnesota handed the Padres their 31st loss in 39 games. San Diego dropped to 18-44, the worst record in the NL.

    JC Romero (2-0) pitched the final two innings as the Twins overcame the first blown save of the season by closer Eddie Guardado.

    Royals-Rockies game postponed

    In Denver, the game between Kansas City and Colorado was postponed because of rain Friday night with the Rockies leading the Royals 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning. The game will be made up Saturday as part of a split doubleheader.

    ESPN will begin broadcasting three MLB games per week. The New York Yankees at Chicago Cubs will be shown live at 1am and repeated at 7am, 12:30pm and 2pm.
