Weekend action around Taiwan

Carnegies is sponsoring the Taiwan Spring Cup 11-a-side soccer tournament this weekend at nearby Hsinchuang Stadium in Taipei County.

Last year's winners, the Taipei Dragons are entering once again and hope to repeat their success, though the Taipei Dragons, Taipei Red Lions, Taipei Animals, Kaohsiung 100 Pacers, Tien-mu B-52's, Tainan Pheonix's, Taichung Compass Utd and Taichung Teletubbies will be vying to stop them.

The matches take place from 11am to 5pm tomorrow and also Sunday.

Runner remembers sisterhood

Hungarian ultra-runner Eidt Berces came to Taiwan to take part in a grueling ultramarathon on Wednesday, but she hoped most to be able to meet her old Taiwanese friend Jessie Lee (李佩真).

For 38-year-old Berces, who is making her first visit to Taiwan, Lee is Taiwan, because virtually all she knows about Taiwan, she learned from Lee.

Berces said that she and Lee were roommates with a host family while studying at the University of California a decade ago. The two developed a sisterhood relationship, according to Berces.

Berces, who will attend the Soochow University International Ultramarathon, said that psychological preparation is even more important than physical adjustment in long-distance running and added that when she runs, her imagination soars.

In addition, "running in Taiwan brings back tidbits of the time I spent with Jessie," she said.

Berces is the only woman ultrarunner in the world to be able to run more than 250km in a 24-hour period. She took the women's world record last year with a distance of 250.106km.

The Soochow University International Ultramarathon will start at 10am tomorrow and end at the same time the next day.

The event will be divided into 24-hour, 12-hour and one-hour celebrity contests.
