LA Dodgers sign up third Taiwan player

The Los Angeles Dodgers said yesterday they have signed Taiwanese infielder Hu Chin-lung (胡金龍) -- the third player from the country to join the club.

Hu, a student at Chinese Culture University in Taipei, has played shortstop and second base, and has been on Taiwan's junior national team for the past three years.

The Dodgers said they scouted Hu at last year's World Junior Championship in Quebec, Canada, where he started as shortstop and hit .474 with four homers and 12 RBIs as his team's leadoff hitter.

``In Hu, we feel like we have a player who shows solid defensive actions and is a plus runner,'' said Jeff Schugel, the Dodgers' special assistant to the general manager, in a statement. ``In addition, he showed us a quick bat and very good bat control.''

Hu is scheduled to report to the Dodgers' spring training camp on March 5.

He is the third Taiwanese player to sign with the Dodgers. His compatriot, outfielder Chen Ching-fong (陳金鋒), made history in Sept. 9, last year, by becoming the first Taiwanese player to join an active Major League roster.

Another Taiwanese, left-handed pitcher Kuo Hong-chih (郭泓志), joined the team's 40-man roster on Nov. 11, last year, making the Dodgers the only club with two Taiwanese on its roster. Both Chen and Kuo are still on the Dodgers' 40-man roster.
