Taiwan beat Kazakhstan 4-1 in their Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group II match in Taipei yesterday, with the two teams tying at reserve singles.
Taiwan had already won the tie by taking 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series on Saturday, and scored another point yesterday while conceding one in the last two singles matches.
Yesterday, Cheng Wei-jen easily beat the youngest of the three Kazak players, 18-year-old Anton Tsymbalov, 6-3, 6-0.
Earlier, Chen Ti lost to Kazak No. 1 Alexey Kedriouk. Kedriouk took a 4-2 lead in the first set after serving an ace and went on to win 6-3. Chen never looked like winning the second set, losing 6-1.
Taiwan will play the winner of the match between China and the Philippines in the second-round matches of the Asia-Oceania zone's second group, slated for April.
