Taiwan won both opening singles to take a 2-0 lead over Kazakhstan on the first day of the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group II match yesterday in Taipei.
Taiwanese No. 1 Lu Yen-hsun beat Kazakh No. 2 Dias Doskarayev 7-5, 6-0, 7-5 to begin a day of domination.
After being trounced in the second set, Doskarayev battled back and built a 2-0 lead in the third set. But Lu tied it up at 5-5 before serving three consecutive aces, putting him ahead for good.
Taiwan's No. 2 Wang Yeu-tzuoo defeated Kazakhstan's No. 1 Alexey Kedriouk 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
The match was close in the first set. But while trailing 4-5, Kedriouk appeared to lose his edge after he became angry about a line call, which prompted him to throw his racket. Wang comfortably won the next two sets.
Today, Taiwan's Chen Ti and Cheng Wei-jen play Doskarayev and Kedriouk in the doubles.
