Warner fails to lift defending champs

Stephen Davis scored three times on short runs to help the Washington Redskins (5-6) rally to defeat the Kurt Warner-led St. Louis Rams 20-17 Sunday.

The defending Super Bowl champion Rams (5-6) are now winless in five starts by Warner, the two times NFL MVP who was out for more than a month earlier this season with a broken little finger on his throwing hand.

Warner completed his first 15 passes as St. Louis took a 10-0 lead. He finished with 301 passing yards but turned over the ball twice.

Danny Wuerffel, named Washington starter early in the week, played mistake-free football, going 16-for-23 for 235 yards.

Buccaneers 21, Packers 7

In Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers (9-2) capitalized on Green Bay mistakes for 15 points in their 21-7 win over the Packers (8-3) in a battle of the NFL's two best teams.

Brad Johnson returned from an early thumping to toss two Tampa touchdowns. Brett Favre threw for Green Bay's only score but was picked off four times.

The Packers have now lost their last five games in Tampa.

Seahawks 39, Chiefs 32

In Seattle, Matt Hasselbeck tossed three touchdowns in a six-minute span to give the Seahawks (4-7) a 39-32 victory over Kansas City (5-6).

Hasselbeck found Mack Strong, Jerramy Stevens and Koren Robinson for scores.

Shaun Alexander tallied twice more for Seattle on three and 46-yard runs. He finished with 145 rush yards but that left him short of Kansas City's Priest Holmes.

Steelers 29, Bengals 21

In Pittsburgh, the Steelers (6-4-1), with Kordell Stewart throwing and Jerome Bettis running the ball again, raced into a 17-0 lead before coming from behind to post a 29-21 win over the floundering Cincinnati Bengals (1-10).

After Cincinnati went up 21-20 midway through the final quarter on Jon Kitna's 20-yard pass to Matt Schobel, Jeff Reed hit a 45-yard field goal to put Pittsburgh ahead again and then Bettis went 24 yards for his second touchdown of the day.

Patriots 24, Vikings 17

In Foxboro, Massachusetts, the New England Patriots (6-5) surged ahead 21-0 on Tom Brady's three touchdown tosses but the Minnesota Vikings (3-8) fought back to make a game of it before falling 24-17.

Brady twice found Christian Fauria for early touchdowns and hooked up with Troy Brown for a third. Daunte Culpepper passed for a pair of Minnesota touchdowns to make it close.

Falcons 41, Panthers 0

In Charlotte, North Carolina, the Atlanta Falcons (7-3-1) scored twice in the last three minutes of the opening quarter to open up a 14-0 lead on the way to a 41-0 drubbing of the Panthers, who have lost eight successive games.

The Falcons are now unbeaten in seven games, one a tie. Carolina quarterback Rodney Peete handed Atlanta its first score on an interception return and then Michael Vick passed 31 yards to Warrick Dunn for another.

Dunn recorded a second touchdown seven minutes later on a five-yard scamper to turn it into a rout.

Jets 31, Bills 13

In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Curtis Martin rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown to carry the surging New York Jets, winners of five of their last six games, to a 31-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills (5-6).

Quarterback Chad Pennington, another reason for the New York turnaround, scored on a one-yard run and hooked up with Laveranues Coles from 11 yards for another touchdown.

Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe gave up the ball three times to hurt his team's chances.

Browns 24, Saints 15

In New Orleans, Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks gave up the ball four times to all but hand the Cleveland Browns (6-5) a 24-15 triumph.

Brooks had three passes intercepted and fumbled once. Browns quarterback Tim Couch was also far from perfect, he had two passes picked off.

Couch was able to find Kevin Johnson for a 24-yard score late in the third quarter to give Cleveland a 21-12 advantage. Rookie William Green ran for 114 yards and a touchdown.

Bears 20, Lions 17 (OT)

In Chicago, the Bears snapped a franchise record eight-game losing skid with a 20-17 overtime win over the Detroit Lions (3-8).

Paul Edinger was the hero, booting a 22-yard field goal with time about to expire to knot it at 17-17, then winning the game with a 40-yard effort in overtime.

Jim Miller drew the Bears close with a touchdown toss to Dez White at 12:27 of the fourth as the Lions blew a 17-7 lead. Miller threw for 250 yards in relief of starter Chris Chandler.

Cowboys 21, Jaguars 19

In Dallas, Chad Hutchinson twice hooked up with Joey Galloway for touchdowns as the Cowboys won for only the fourth time this season, edging the Jacksonville Jaguars 21-19.

Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time rush leader, got Dallas's other six-pointer on a one-yard plunge. He rushed for 73 yards overall.

Mark Brunell found Kevin Lockett for a late touchdown to draw Jacksonville (5-6) close. Fred Taylor rambled for 100 yards for the Jags.

Dolphins 30, Chargers 3

In Miami, running back Ricky Williams raced for 143 yards and two touchdowns as the Dolphins (7-4) cruised to a 30-3 win over the San Diego Chargers (7-4). Olindo Mare chipped in with three field goals, the longest from 38 yards.
