Basel's Christian Gross, ridiculed as a manager four years ago in England, got revenge on Tuesday as his Swiss side stunned Liverpool 3-3 and sent England's league leaders out of the Champions League.

Basel took a 3-0 lead after only 29 minutes, but the four-time European champions rallied with three late goals. But they weren't enough as Basel advanced with nine points to eight for Liverpool in Group B. Valencia had already won the group.

Gross, who spend 10 months at London's Tottenham and had his coaching widely questioned, saw Basel become the first Swiss team to reach the final 16 of the prestigious Champions League at the expense of the four-time European champions.

Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Real Madrid had already advanced among sides playing Tuesday.

The three remaining spots in the final 16 were to be decided yesterday with Juventus, Man United, Leverkusen, AC Milan and Barcelona already through to the next round.

Arsenal 0, PSV Eindhoven 0

At London, the draw allowed the Gunners to finish in first place in the group. Borussia Dortmund, which lost 1-0 to Auxerre, also finished with 10 points.

Arsenal will be seeded in Friday's draw for the second round by virtue of a better goal difference. PSV finished in fourth with six points and goes out.

Swedish goalkeeper Rami Shaaban made his debut as the Gunners rested their regulars.

Auxerre 1, Borussia Dortmund 1

At Auxerre, France, Benjamin Mwaruwari's second-half goal gave Auxerre the win. Auxerre, already out of contention for the second phase, secured a berth in the UEFA Cup thanks to its victory.

Valencia 3, Spartak Moscow 0

At Valencia, Spain, striker Juan Sanchez netted twice in the comfortable victory. Sanchez scored either side of halftime with Brazilian left back Fabio Aurelio adding a third toward the end as Valencia, which had already won the group, inflicted the last-place Russian team's sixth successive defeat.

Genk 1, Real Madrid 1

At Genk, Belgium, Belgian striker Wesley Sonck scored in the 86th to equalize. Real Madrid scored early from Jorge ``Tote'' Lopez. Defending and nine-time champion Real won the group.

Roma 1, AEK Athens 1

At Rome, Marco Delvecchio scored a first-half goal for Roma and Walter Centeno equalized in the 90th. Roma needed only a draw to advance and finished with nine points. AEK goes to the UEFA Cup.

Ajax 1, Inter Milan 2

Inter Milan won the group with 11 points. Ajax, despite the loss, also advanced with eight points. Lyon, which also finished with eight, was ousted because it was defeated by Ajax in their head-to-head games.

Rosenborg 1, Lyon 1

Lyon, which would have advanced with a victory, fell behind on Harald Martin Brattbakk's goal in the 68th. Sidney Govou scored in the 82nd for Lyon.
