Soccer: Wembley on track
A deal to go ahead with the long-delayed development of Wembley Stadium has been completed with demolition of the old stadium to begin in several weeks. News reports yesterday, citing sources at the English Football Association, said the project had finally be given the green light with an FA news conference set for later yesterday. Officials were expected to explain plans for the new 90,000-seat stadium, which will reportedly cost ?750 million (US$1.16 billion).
Cycling: Furlan speeds to victory
Italian cyclist Angelo Furlan won the 17th stage of the Tour of Spain on Wednesday after a pulling off a surprise final-stretch sprint. Furlan, who rides for the Alessio team, edged ahead of Germany's Erik Zabel in the final meters to take the stage, a 145km ride across the flatlands between Benavente and Salamanca in north-central Spain. The stage produced no changes in the overall standings with Spain's Roberto Heras of the US Postal team still leading by 35 seconds over fellow Spaniard Aitor Gonzalez and 1:08 ahead of other compatriot Oscar Sevilla.
US Football: Moss walks away free
Randy Moss walked out of jail whistling, charged with two misdemeanors instead of a possible felony for allegedly pushing a traffic officer a half-block with his car. The Minnesota Vikings' star receiver won't even miss a game. Moss was released Wednesday from the Hennepin County jail after spending the night. He was charged with careless driving and failure to obey a traffic officer. Dana Banwer, a deputy attorney for Minneapolis, said each charge carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a US$1,000 fine.
