Chen inspires Lions to victory against Whales

In a sea-saw game between the President Lions and the Chinatrust Whales, in a makeup game rained out the day before, the Lions ran out winners 6-4.

The Lions scored their fifth run on pinch hitter Chen Cheng-shien's (陳政賢) single and ultimately scored the insurance run and took the game away from the Whales to complete their three-game weekend series.

The Lions, who have only won two games in the past nine matches, sent their foreign ace John Burgos (10-11) to the mound to face Whales starter Kao Chien-san (高建三) who had a winning record of 2-0 against the Lions this season.

The Lions scored in the first inning with Luo Min-ching's (羅敏卿) single that sent Huang Kan-lin (黃甘霖) home to register an early lead.

By carrying the single Luo also became the first player in Taiwan's baseball history ever to compile 600 RBIs, setting another record besides hitting his 100th homerun on Aug. 18.

Trailing 2-0 Whales also managed to score one run against Burgos as Chen Wen-bin (陳文賓) launched his 23rd home run of the season to shorten the gap between the two clubs.

The Lions added another run on the top of the fourth.

After Luo was walked and another hit was produced, Tsai Kun-shiang's (蔡昆祥) single drove his teammate back to score another run to make the score 3-1.

However the Whales came right back in the same inning to score another run to keep the game close.

At the bottom of the sixth the Whales took advantage of rookie pitcher Shen Bo-tsang (沈柏蒼) who relieved Burgos as Jee Joon-lin (紀俊麟) hit a line drive to the center with a bases loaded situation to knock in two runs.

The Whales had the lead for the first time in the game as the score stood at 4-3 after completion of six innings of play.

Trailing by one run, the Lions also rallied back in the seventh

inning. Huang Kan-lin's (黃甘霖) single to the center drove in the tying run to even the score at four apiece.

Huang also registered his 35th stolen base of the season.

The game went to extra innings as the score was still tied after nine innings.

On the top of the twelfth Lions pinch hitter Chen Cheng-shien hit a single to the left that scored the fifth run of the night for the Lions.

The sixth run was added in the same inning and gave the Whales a 6-4 lead until the end of the game.
