Locla sports: Storm scratches skating
Organizers confirmed yesterday the 2002 Nutrilite Extreme Challenge would be postponed because of Typhoon Sinlaku. World champions Jaren Grob, Fabiola Da Silva, Japan's Eito Yasutoko and brother Takeshi, along with Sam Fogarty and Randy Marino were to attend the event scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei. Over 200 locals were also taking part in the competition. Title sponsor representative Thomas Wang said, "For the security of the athletes and the fans we have decided to postpone the competition." The rescheduled date will be announced after discussions with the Aggressive Skater's Association.
Local Sports: Olympic baseball faces ax
Top officials of the Chinese Taipei Amateur Baseball Association (CTBA) have arrived in Geneva to take part in an emergency meeting called to try to save baseball from being axed as an Olympic sport. CTBA Chairman Tom Peng, accompanied by several CTBA officials, were scheduled to proceed to Lausanne yesterday to participate in an emergency meeting called by the Executive Committee of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) to come up with counter-measures to keep baseball as an Olympic event. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) proposed recently to dump baseball, along with softball and the modern pentathlon from the summer Olympics.
Soccer: Owen given captain's job
Liverpool striker Michael Owen will captain England in the friendly against Portugal tomorrow after David Beckham was ruled out with an injury, the BBC reported on Wednesday. Owen was handed the skipper's armband as Beckham will miss the game at Villa Park with a strained calf muscle. The 22-year-old first deputized for Beckham against Paraguay in April and continued in the role until the Manchester United midfielder returned to the England line-up for the World Cup clash against Sweden in June.
Soccer: Keane charged over book
Roy Keane's turbulent career took another grim but expected downturn on Wednesday when he was charged with two counts of bringing the game into disrepute arising out of the autobiography in which he admits intending to hurt an opponent in a tackle. Because of his poor disciplinary record, the 30-year-old Manchester United captain is expected to face a lengthy ban if he's found guilty. He was shown the red for the 10th time for elbowing an opponent in the face at the end of United's 1-1 tie with Sunderland on Saturday.
Table tennis: S Korea hosts championship
A total of 64 players, including 14 South Koreans and eight Japanese, cleared preliminary men's singles yesterday at the Korea Open Table Tennis Championships. Thirty-two players passed the preliminaries in women's singles. They included 10 South Koreans, six Hong Kong players and five Japanese. Those who passed the preliminaries will compete in the tournaments that start Friday. A total of 85 men and 52 women from 22 countries are participating in the four-day championships in Gangneung, 170km east of Seoul, organizers said.
