CNA , NANTOU

Taiwan will light its torch for the Busan Asian Games in Nantou County tomorrow, the Nantou County Government said yesterday.

This is the first time that all of the 43 member states of the Asian Olympic Committee will be allowed to light up their own torches for the Asian Games, scheduled for Sept. 30 to Oct. 15 in Busan, South Korea.

The torch of each participating country will be taken to Busan after having circled major cities of the respective countries.

All the torches will be lit simultaneously at the opening ceremony of the Busan Asian Games.

"The Taiwan torch will be lit in a traditional way with tribal songs sung by Bunun Aborigines, near a memorial monument in Puli township at 9:20am, Thursday, " a Nantou county official said, adding that the location is the geographic center point of Taiwan.

A group of aboriginal tribesmen will carry the torch to circle around Puli's downtown area and the torch will then be taken to a mountain resort for an overnight stay. The torch will be carried to the main peak of Mount Jade the following day.

The torch is scheduled to arrive at the summit of Mount Jade at 9am Friday. At 10am, the image of the torch will be transmitted via satellite to the Taipei Municipal Stadium, where a bronze tripod will be lit to mark the completion of the torch lighting event.

The Nantou County Government will mobilize more than 4,000 people, including students, volunteers and policemen, to welcome the torch.
