Clemens (10-3) won despite allowing five runs on 10 hits and four walks in five-plus innings. He reached 10 wins for the 16th time in his career, the most among active pitchers.
Clemens is 7-0 in his last eight starts against Kansas City, dating back to 1997.
Jeff Suppan (8-12) gave up six runs on eight hits and five walks in 5 2-3 innings.
The Yankees have won 11 of the last 12 games against Kansas City, and 31 of the last 39. Robin Ventura homered to highlight a four-run seventh inning as the Yankees broke away.
Mike Sweeney hit a double in his first at-bat in nearly a month, and went 2-for-5 for the Royals. He was activated from the disabled list prior to the game after missing 30 games with a back and hip strain.

In Minneapolis, Rick Reed pitched a five-hitter and Doug Mientkiewicz homered twice as Minnesota beat Baltimore.
Reed (10-6) struck out four and walked one in his sixth career shutout and first of the season.
Mientkiewicz had three hits and drove in three runs. David Ortiz also homered and added a two-run double in Minnesota's four-run fourth inning.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, Karim Garcia hit his second career grand slam during a seven-run fifth inning as Cleveland beat Tampa Bay.
Garcia made it 8-2 when he hit the first pitch off Tanyon Sturtze (1-13) into the right-field seats.
Lee Stevens had walked on a close 3-2 pitch with two outs before Garcia connected for his first slam since Sept. 23, 1998.
C.C. Sabathia (8-9) gave up three runs and six hits over seven innings. Mark Wohlers got two outs for his fifth save.
White Sox 12, Rangers 3
In Arlington, Texas, Jose Valentin homered twice, including his sixth career grand slam, and drove in six runs to power Chicago over Texas.
It was the 11th multihomer game for the switch-hitter, who homered from both sides of the plate in the same game for the third time. Valentin's matched a career high for RBIs.

In Seattle, Japanese slugger Ichiro Suzuki drove in three runs and scored once as Seattle defeated Boston.
Desi Relaford was a home run short of hitting for the cycle for Seattle, driving in two runs and scoring twice. He filled in for shortstop Carlos Guillen, who sat out for the third straight game with a strained left thigh muscle.
Dan Wilson had three hits with a double for the AL West leaders, and Suzuki doubled and singled.
