Lions claw one game back against Elephants

By Richard Wang  /  CONTRIBUTING REPORTER , IN TAICHUNG

Having lost twice in a three-game series, the Lions fought back against the Elephants last night in Taichung and came out smiling with a 6-3 victory.

The Elephants, however, held on to their first place in the standings with an 8-3 record, while the Lions remain third with a 5-6 record, in the second half of the season.

The Elephants scored their first run with Tsai Feng-an's (蔡豐安) solo home run, his 13th of the season, at the bottom of the second inning to give the Elephants a 1-0 lead.

Another two runs were added on the next inning for the Elephants to lead with three runs to none.

The Lions, however, came back with hits against Nakagomi Shin for two solo home runs on the top of the fourth.

Another run in the fifth tied the game at three apiece until the completion of the seventh inning.

The top of the eighth proved to be the key inning for the Lions as their batters doubled their efforts, getting three hits and scoring not only the go-ahead run but also an insurance run, to give the Lions the lead for the first time in the game.

The Lions underlined their superiority on the night in the ninth with another run to finish the game 6-3.

Lions manager Tseng Chih-chen (曾智偵) said reliever Chen Rong-dzao's performance -- pitching four innings and allowing just two hits and no run -- showed courage under difficult conditions.

Tseng was also upbeat about Lions rookie and first pick overall in the mid-season draft, Shen Po-tsang (沈柏蒼), who pitched one-and-two-third innings.

He said Shen had learned to be careful when pitching to top players and also maintain 100 percent concentration.

The Lions and the Whales will be playing in Hualien this week.

Many of the country's best Aboriginal players come from Hualien and games in the county are generally well supported.

The series promises to be exciting, as the second-place Whales and fourth-place Bulls duel it out.
