Lo Min-chin (羅敏卿) of the Uni-President Lions (統一獅) was voted MVP of the Year at a banquet yesterday hosted by the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中華職棒聯盟).

At the awards ceremony, held at Taipei's Ambassador Hotel, Lo was voted MVP by local sports reporters for his consistently excellent performance throughout the baseball season.

The 35-year-old player from Hualien County was also named the year's best batter and received a NT$230,000 bonus.

His team, however, was defeated by its long-time rival, the Brother Elephants (兄弟象), in this year's championship game last Sunday.

After winning their third championship seven years ago, the Elephants captured their fourth in the Oct. 14 with a 7-5 win.

The CPBL also announced that this year's best newcomer award went to Chen Chih-yuan (陳致遠) of the Elephants. Hsieh Cheng-hsun (謝承勳) of the ChinaTrust Whales (和信鯨) was voted Most Improved Player.

Lin Chung-chiu (林仲秋) of the Sinon Bulls (興農牛) was voted the homerun leader and received NT$200,000. The 43-year-old player revealed, however, that he might retire next year.

Meanwhile, the CPBL confirmed that the League will have three All-star games with the national team in an effort to promote the upcoming 34th Baseball World Cup, which will be held in Taipei next month.

The All-star team will be led by Elephants' coach Lin Yi-tseng (林易增), one of the most successful players in Taiwan's history, who retired in March this year.

The three games will be held tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, in Tainan, Taichung and Taipei.

Taipei won the bid to hold the this year's Cup in 1999.

There will be 16 teams in this year's World Cup. The teams are divided into two groups and include: the US, South Korea, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Italy, Taiwan, South Africa and France in the Group A. Cuba, Japan, Australia, Canada, Panama, Holland, Philippines and Russia comprise Group B.

This year has been designated Taiwan's "Baseball Year."
