The lay service for the 60-year-old was held outside the parish hurch where his family had wanted a religious funeral.

    UK forces destroy police station

A British military spokesman said troops decided to launch the raid amid concerns that Iraqi police officers, who have been accused of a string of atrocities in Basra, might kill their prisoners before their controversial unit was shut down.
