    Annual Thai rite produces conflicting omens

    Royal white Brahma bulls are offered food to consult the oracles during the Royal Ploughing Ceremony at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace in Bangkok yesterday. The ancient Brahmin Ploughing Ceremony is of great importance to the kingdom's farmers. Thousands of people including farmers converge for the ceremony, which is believed to ensure a successful planting season and an abundance of crops. The royal soothsayer at the ceremony predicted Thailand would have a year of abundant rain and good harvests.
