Buddha relic almost breaks ban

CROSS-STRAIT TIES The company transporting a Buddhist relic from China wanted to get around the ban on direct links by foregoing a requisite stop in Hong Kong

In 874, it was sealed under a basement of the Famen Temple's (法門寺) pagoda in Xian city by order of a Tang Dynasty emperor.

Since then it had not been seen in public until 1986 when the Shaanxi provincial government cleared the rubble of the temple pagoda, which collapsed in 1981 amid torrential rains.
