"If the waste truly is `non-toxic' and `non-radioactive' as claimed, why doesn't Taiwan want to deal with it domestically?" the press release said.
The criticism of international activists were echoed by Taiwanese environmentalists yesterday.
"We cannot ignore harsh criticism from the international community," said Eric Liou (劉銘龍), secretary-general of the Environmental Quality Protection Foundation. "The government should give dishonest merchants a clear message: Shipping hazardous waste overseas illegally will never be permitted."
EPA officials said yesterday the nation generates 1.5 million tonnes of industrial waste annually, but the agency is only able to track 80 percent of the total.
