Thai authorities have closed five factories of the Thai-Taiwan joint venture Delta Electronics (台達電子) near Bangkok after cracks were found in the walls of two of them, a report said yesterday.
The order followed the collapse Friday of the roof of one of the company's computer factories in the Bangpoo Industrial Estate, 50km southeast of Bangkok, which killed seven workers and injured 57. The collapse was blamed on added weight placed on the factory's roof by the construction of structures alongside it to house air-conditioners.
Industry Minister Suriya Juengrungruengkij said work at some of the factories might be allowed to resume next week because, despite the cracks, the buildings' steel structures were intact.
