    Chad anti-AIDS program planned

    CNA, TAIPEI

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday it will recruit volunteers with public-health backgrounds to work for an anti-AIDS program in the central African state of Chad.

Foreign ministry officials said the ministry signed an agreement with Care France, a French charitable organization, in November, under which Taiwan will offer a total of US$1.02 million over three years to finance an AIDS prevention and control program in Chad.

"The project is mainly aimed at establishing a nationwide comprehensive education and publicity system in Chad in order to upgrade its people's awareness of the deadly disease and the major ways they can protect themselves from contracting AIDS, as well as to curb the spread of the disease," said a foreign ministry official.

To cultivate more diplomatic talent to aid Taiwan's participation in major international organizations and activities, the official said, the foreign ministry is cooperating with the Department of Health in recruiting trained vol-unteers to work for the anti-AIDS program in Chad.

Those who have a bachelor's degree or above in public health or who have participated in anti-AIDS field studies and can speak fluent French or English are welcome to register for the Chad program, the official said.

Registration will close Jan. 15. The foreign ministry and the health department will jointly select qualified hopefuls to work in Chad for three months from February through mid-May next year.

Those wishing to be considered for the program can e-mail their personal resumes to either the Department of Health at yuchen@cdc.gov.tw, or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at unsec@mofa.gov.tw
