New Year one of war and disaster, astrologer predicts

DPA , TAIPEI

Next year will be one of war and disaster with the US suffering more terrorist attacks and the world economy slowing down in the first half, a renowned Taiwanese astrologer said yesterday.

"2002 is a year of water with some fire in it. Fire and water fight each other, so there will be small-scale war and disasters," Yu Hsue-hung, 52, said.

"Bush fires are already burning in Australia and threatening Sydney. That is a sign of disasters in 2002," he said.

Yu said the US will not catch Osama bin Laden for a year, and predicted only when the US joins hands with China can it defeat Arab terrorists.

Yu based his predictions on astrology of Feng Shui, Ba Zi (conditions of one's birth) and the Chinese horoscope.

"The world's fortune goes in a circle every 60 years. Sixty years ago Japan attacked Pear Harbor, but the year after than, 1942, saw the fiercest battle in World War II, so the aftermath of Sept. 11 attacks will continue for some years," he said.

Yu said because many US financiers died in the World Trade Center attacks, the fortune of the US will shift from the east coast to the west coast of the country.

"The US will lead the world in information industry, and Europe will take the lead in biotechnology," he said.

He foresees that for most countries, the economy will be bad in the first half of next year and improve in the later half.

"The recession will hit the bottom in 2003 and recovery will begin after 2004," he said.

Yu said tension with China will last until 2003.

"In 2004, Taiwan will elect a president who will have no hatred towards China. Then bilateral ties will thaw."

Yu predicted that direct links with China will open within two years.
